Muscadet I Say

“It’s what I’m buying for white wine these days…”

The wines from Muscadet Sevre et Maine probably aren’t for everyone. I have a lot of friends who really enjoy these whites for their racy minerality, but I also know at least one very cool wine dude who simply can’t abide. (I won’t mention your name, Bob!) The appellation lies about as far west in the Loire Valley as you can go without wandering into the Atlantic. The grape variety, Melon de
Bourgogne, is hardly fashionable, but it’s perfect for this region when the wine is made well. Not surprisingly, they are excellent with seafood.

I’m always on the lookout for good Muscadet, and this one does more than yeoman’s duty, especially at this price.

2021 Domaine Des 3 Versants Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie, 12% alc., $12.99: Medium straw in color, and medium bodied, this delivers pretty much everything I look for in a good Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie. Zippy acidity keeps it lively, and when I took my first few sips, I kept thinking, “It’s not REALLY like drinking out of a well-seasoned corrugated watering can,” but it does have that funky wet stone minerality that I like so well. The mineral sets the tone, striking a nice counterpoint for the wine’s citrus fruit character, and a plate of shucked oysters would go so well with a glass of this satisfying libation. Actually, it’ll pair nicely with a variety of lighter seafood dishes. I had a glass with a plate of baked cod splashed with lemon tonight, and they played together very nicely.

You’ll pay $20 or more for one of the better bottles from the likes of Domaine de la Pépière and Domaine Luneau-Papin, my two favorite producers from this appellation.
This  may not be “great” Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie, but it’s really good, and it’s a solid QPR value at $12.99. It’s what I’m buying for white wine these days, and Western Market in Ferndale has plenty. Get you some before we drink more than our share, because we will. Find this wine
