Cote des Roses

“…a great choice for an everyday dry rosé.”

A few days ago, I played my first music gig in almost two years, blowing harp in a small ensemble backing the very fine Detroit singer-songwriter Emily Rose in her tribute to Townes van Zandt. It was a marvelous night of music, and when I got home, it was too late to open any bubbly or a big red, so I celebrated with a couple of glasses of dry rosé, and that was just fine by me.

2023 Gérard Bertrand ‘Cote des Roses’ Rosé Languedoc, 13% alc., $12.89: This is the third consecutive vintage of this that we’ve enjoyed in the last year, and it performs pretty much the same as the previous two. It’s a somewhat pale pink, but not so shy in flavor, with a pleasing watermelon, strawberry and mineral character. It’s a little earthy, almost dusty even, giving some added nuance to the wine. It has a nice balance to it and it goes down easily, making it a great choice for an everyday dry rosé. Find this wine

Our friendly neighborhood Costco has the better part of a pallet on the floor, and we pick up one or two every time we’re there. I’ve seen it at other retailers around town, and Trader Joe’s in Royal Oak has the next best price at $17.99. I’m not saying it isn’t worth the money, but why would I want to buy a wine for 18 bucks when I can get it right down the road for $13?
