A Solid 8 Dollar Red

It’s not so easy to find a good red wine for $8 these days, but that’s exactly what I happened upon during my last visit to our friendly neighborhood Costco a few days ago. Like the last two selections reviewed in these pages (here and here), this is another one of those “off-the-beaten-path” wines from one of the last bastions of Malbec in France, Cahors. Comprised mostly of said Malbec, with a good dollop of Merlot to boot, this will serve in much the same way as a good Bordeaux, in that it plays well with a variety of red meat dishes, especially those that are beef-centric.

2021 Château de Grézels Cahors Prestige, 70% Malbec, 30% Merlot, 13.5% alc., $7.99: This is a substantial wine for so few dollars. It’s big, it’s chewy and it’s intense. This is old world in style, with a solid core of earthy black currant shaded with tobacco, old wood and coffee. Full-bodied, with the structure to age for at least a few years, and a bit astringent on the finish in its youth, this is still drinking well enough now for me to take a 2nd and 3rd pour, for research purposes only. A great buy for 8 bucks a bottle, so buy some for now and buy some for later. Find this wine

This is a great choice for an everyday red made in an old world style. There’s nothing flashy here, and it won’t make you say ‘Wow.’ It just does what it’s supposed to, delivering an honest, food friendly glass of wine, and that’s fine with me.
