“…this just might be a perfect everyday dry white wine.”
I am much remiss for not reviewing this wine sooner, since I’ve known and enjoyed it for some years; hell, I used to sell it in a previous life in retail. Unfortunately, I’ve been passing it over for the last few months, looking to investigate things that are new to me, but I finally dropped one into a six-pack for the 10% discount at Holiday Market in Royal Oak last week. When I twisted off the screw cap a few nights later, I was reminded again just how good this is, especially for the price.
2022 Domaine des Cassagnoles Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gascogne, 12% alc., $9.99: This is an exuberant wine, dry, yet fairly rich; it performs well with a broad spectrum of white-friendly foods, and drinks nicely all by itself. There’s an appealing tart zing to the grapefruit-citrus green apple flavors, restrained minerality and a subtle floral note add to the mix, making it a little different from any white I’ve had lately. Medium-to-medium-full bodied, with balanced, active acids, this just might be a perfect everyday dry white wine. We’ll certainly be twisting more Stelvins off of these over the coming weeks and months.
Sustainable. Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng, Sauvignon Blanc. Each grape variety is vinified separately. Small skin maceration for the Colombard and the Gros Manseng. Aged in tank until bottling. Crispy and zesty wine, very pleasant, especially enjoyed with tarts and cakes either salty or sweet, with seafoods, grilled fishes, some cheese.

The price listed above reflects what I paid at Holiday Market. Westborn Market on Woodward, in Berkley, has a stack display with bottles priced at $10.99, a fair price for the quality of the wine. It’s also available at other locations in the Detroit-area market, though I haven’t paid close enough attention to quote locations and prices. Bottom line: If you see it, buy it, try it and see what you think. I’m betting you’ll like it as much as I do. Tasted twice (so far) with consistent impressions. Find this wine
