Bargain Bordeaux

This wine takes me back to the days when we were finding good Bordeaux for around $12 or $13 a bottle on a regular basis. Sort of…

Back in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, we were finding, buying and drinking (often too young) the likes for Château Gloria and Château Beychevelle, and we were paying around the same price that I’m getting this one for. Of course, Gloria and Beychevelle are Left Bank wines, which are generally Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, and much more prestigious properties than Chateau Teyssier Montagne-Saint-Émilion, a Merlot based red from the Right Bank. Still, it’s hard to mistake any of these for anything other than Bordeaux, where red wine is made like nowhere else in the world.

2019 Château Teyssier Montagne-Saint-Émilion, 75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 14% alc., $12.69: It’s pretty obvious that you have some good Bordeaux in your glass with the very first whiff of this. It’s sleek and well-balanced, with good intensity and silky tannins that actually seem to complement the black currant, old wood, leather and cedar flavors. It opens quickly with air, so give it half an hour in a decanter, and enjoy. This will age and improve over the next five years or so, but it’s so good now, I’ll buy at least a few for current consumption. It’s definitely a second (and third) glass kind o’ wine, and then some.

There is a lot of this at our friendly neighborhood Costco right now; I saw an entire pallet of the stuff there just today. But when word gets out about it, it might not be around for long, especially at this price. Frankly, I can’t think of a better red for under $13 currently available in these parts. Find this wine
