“Every time we uncork one, I enjoy this more.”
I don’t drink as much wine as I used to. As my body ages, I can’t process alcohol as efficiently as I once did. Reds have been problematic for me, because I can’t find any pleasure in a tannic young wine anymore. When I want a glass, I look for something I can drink and enjoy right now, and happily, this one has been giving us a lot of pleasure over the last few months.
2020 Domaine des Pasquiers Côtes du Rhône, 14.5% alc., $12.99: This little charmer opens with as little as 15 minutes in the glass; give it half an hour in a decanter and it may sing pretty songs to you. It certainly hits all the right notes for my wife Kim and me. Deep and rich in color, it exudes earthy, subtly spiced crushed berries on the nose, with plenty more of the same in the mouth. It has the structure for at least a few years in the cellar, and may be even better by next December, but it’s so nice already, and it’ll pair well with a wide variety of red-friendly foods. Frankly, I enjoy drinking a glass or two of this all by its lonesome. I especially like how the earthier element balances and tones down the rich fruit intensity a bit. Every time we uncork one, I enjoy this more. Find this wine
Domaine des Pasquiers has been in continuous operation since 1935, and is now run by brothers Jean-Claude and Philippe Lambert and their children, Matthieu and Perrine. No varietal information is listed on the labels, but the website cites Black Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre as those grown in the vineyard, so this likely is some combination of the three.

The guys at Holiday Market in Royal Oak tell me that it has been flying off the shelf. I have been somewhat responsible. I’ve been picking up at least two or three bottles a week and dropping them in a 6-pack for the 10% discount. This is a genuine QPR All-Star, so maybe you should try some before we drink it all.

Your prices in the usa are so bloody cheap.
Well, this certainly is a great price on this particular bottle of wine, which I absolutely love. One sip just demands another!
It is so great to see you back! More notes, please, Geo!
Thanks so much, Joel, it’s good to BE back! My intention is to maintain a steady stream of notes, so stay tuned!
Agree with Joel, good tips like this are greatly appreciated. Also, good to know I’m in good company with age related imbibing moderation realities.
Cheers.
Thanks for the kind words, MJ! We do what we can and what we have to to keep enjoying these good wines, eh?
Hey, bro. Saw your note on Facebook w/ a link to your vino notes. Sad to hear your music career is on brief hiatus, but thankfully that is but one of your many talents 🙂
And thanks for the notes. While Lauren’s favorite is still Pinot, we mostly drink inexpensive french with a splash of italy and spain. A good zin now and again. Exspeshuly love cotes du rhones, though, and I will keep a lookout for the Pasquiers. As you know, we are spoiled with all the great wine shops out here.
May your web wine adventures flourish, and if you are ever out our way give me a holler.
Hey, Hank, it’s so nice to hear from you! I was just reminiscing fondly a few days ago about the night we stayed up late at your place, drinking great wine and listening to the likes of Van Morrison and The Cowboy Junkies. What a night!
Yes, I’m glad I have an outlet like this to keep me occupied while I figure out what I’m doing musically. We do need to get back out your way sometime soon. Isn’t Popelouchum right down the road from you? We have an open invitation to visit there, which would tie right in with a visit with you.
Best to you and Lauren, we miss you both!
